Carbon Reduction

Once a baseline has been established (following the previous steps in the carbon management plan), organisations can explore the best options for carbon reduction. Strategies can include:

  • Improving energy efficiency (installing LED lights in offices, installing building management energy systems)

  • Transitioning to lower carbon/renewable energy sources (installing solar panel, removing gas boilers, purchasing electric vehicle fleets)

  • Implementing sustainable business practices (i.e. cycle to work schemes, zero waste to landfill schemes, improving business travel policies to restrict air travel)

  • Engaging with your supply chain to begin the discussion of improving practices and lowering emissions from procurement

The best strategies will depend on a number of factors, and figuring out which ones is an integral part of the development of a carbon management plan. Strategies can include:

  1. Mitigation: Reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. This can be achieved through a variety of means such as increasing energy efficiency, switching to clean energy sources, and sustainable business practices.

  2. Lifestyle changes: Encouraging individuals to make changes in their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint, such as eating less meat, using public transportation, and buying energy-efficient appliances.

  3. Carbon sequestration: Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in long-term sinks such as oceans, soils, and vegetation.

  4. Carbon offsetting: Offsetting emissions by investing in projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, such as reforestation or renewable energy projects.

Reducing carbon emissions is a complex and ongoing process that requires a strategic and holistic approach. By accurately accounting for and reporting on their emissions, organisations can identify opportunities for carbon reduction which can then be used to set carbon targets and goals.
